HB Dive Wk is a downhill run play out of Pistol Strong with 21 personnel that hits the weak side gap between the guard and tackle. The offensive line fires forward with a straight-ahead zone/gap combo block, the fullback wraps to seal the edge, and the HB takes the handoff on a north-south track with no lateral flow to disguise it. There are no pass routes shown, this is a pure run design meant to attack light boxes with a quick, one-cut path through the line.
Defensive Reads
Read the linebacker depth before the snap, if both backers are stacked tight at 3 yards or less they are keying run and will beat blockers to the gap. Watch for a Mike linebacker blitz or run-fit at the second level, since a fast-flowing backer can blow this play up before the fullback gets a hat on him. This dive struggles against 46 heavy fronts and Bear fronts where extra defensive linemen clog the interior gaps, avoid calling it into those looks. It works well against base 4-3 or 4-2-5 looks with backers playing two-gapped and passive, especially if the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells that pull safeties out of the box. Post-snap, track the fullback's block, if he loses his matchup immediately, cut away from the play design rather than trying to force it through the mesh point.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box since the dive has no misdirection to buy extra time.
Use it on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep the offense on schedule and stay balanced against aggressive pass rush calls.
Pair it with HB Power and HB Off Tackle from the same set so defenders keying on gap runs can't sit on one landmark, and mix in Read Option or Triple Option to punish linebackers who crash too fast.
Against defenses that load the weak side, motion the fullback or check to HB Stretch to get the ball to the edge where the box is lighter.
User the fullback into the first unblocked defender at the point of attack instead of leaving it to AI logic, this is what turns a stuffed dive into a explosive gain.
