Breakdown

HB Counter out of Pistol Strong shows the counter blocking scheme with the offensive line pulling the backside guard and tackle across the formation to lead the HB through the point of attack, while the fullback or extra blocker kicks out the edge defender. The HB takes a counter step away from the play direction before pressing back to the pulling linemen, forcing linebackers to flow hard one way before the ball cuts back. This is a gap scheme run play built to exploit overaggressive run fits and gap-shooting defensive tackles rather than a pass concept, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is patience behind the pulling guard, then the kick out block, then the alley to daylight.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front with linebackers stacked tight to the line, since heavy fronts can beat the counter with quick gap penetration before the pullers arrive. Watch for a Sam or Will linebacker keying the pulling guard, since a user-controlled defender who reads the counter step and squeezes the cutback lane can blow up the play for a loss. Check safety depth before the snap, if a safety is sitting shallow in the box expecting run, they can add a fast flow defender to the counter side and close the alley. Post-snap, look at how fast the play side linebackers flow toward the initial counter step, if they stay disciplined and hold their gaps instead of flowing hard, the cutback lane disappears. This run struggles against gap-sound defenses that stay home and spill everything to pursuit rather than overplaying flow, so mix in outside zone or stretch concepts if the defense refuses to bite on the misdirection.

Usage Tips

Use HB Counter on early downs when the defense has shown a tendency to shoot gaps or crash hard on inside zone looks, since the misdirection punishes aggressive linebacker flow.

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders, since the counter action takes extra time to develop and a heavy box will blow it up.

Pair this with HB Power and Ravens Power in the same personnel and formation so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes off the same Pistol Strong look, keeping linebackers guessing on run fits.

Sequence HB Counter after a couple of quick inside zone or dive runs to bait linebackers into flowing fast downhill, then hit them with the cutback timing once they overcommit.

Avoid calling this on third and short against stacked fronts, since the initial counter step can lose yardage if the defensive line penetrates before the pullers get set.
