Inside Zone Split is a pure inside zone run out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel, featuring a fullback or second back split to the weak side of the formation to create an extra gap conflict for the defense. The offensive line zone blocks in unison, sliding to the play side while the split back and TE handle the edge, giving the ballcarrier a track to read from the double team at the point of attack out to the backside cutback lane. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and overpursuing linebackers, with the primary read being the play side double team combo block into the first wide open crease.
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he is sitting shallow expecting run he will flow hard and you need to be ready to cut back against his pursuit. Overloaded fronts with a extra defender stacked in the A or B gap can blow this play up before the zone stretch develops, especially against aggressive gap shooting defensive tackles. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support usually means the box is light, this is when inside zone hits fastest. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the hole reading the mesh point, this lurk threat is the biggest danger to the cutback lane. Zone shells with two deep safeties and light box counts get gashed by this run, but a single high safety rotating down into the box as an extra run defender takes away the cutback and forces the back to commit to one gap.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box this play hits hard between the tackles.
Use the split back alignment to identify if the defense is shifting a linebacker or safety over the top, which tells you whether to hit it inside or bounce it out.
Hot route the TE into a quick chip release if you are facing a heavy edge blitz look, this keeps the play side gap clean for the zone track.
Pair this with HB Power or HB Counter from the same personnel and formation so the defense cannot key run direction based on backfield action alone.
Best called on early downs or short yardage, especially second and short, where defenses are more likely to sell out on pass coverage looks.
