Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders which signals a run blitz designed to blow up inside zone before the double teams can climb. Key the linebacker depth pre-snap since shallow linebackers crashing downhill are vulnerable to the cutback lane once the frontside double team seals the play side gap. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box usually means this play can pick up positive yardage on the frontside gap. Watch for user-controlled defensive linemen shooting gaps immediately after the snap, since a well timed A gap shoot can beat the zone blocking scheme before the backs get to the line. Look for safeties creeping down into the box pre-snap, which indicates run support is coming and the cutback read becomes more important than the frontside gap.

Check the box count before the snap and confirm you have enough blockers in the box relative to defenders to avoid running into a stacked front.
Use this play on early downs like first and second and ten to stay ahead of the chains and keep the offense balanced.
Identify the Mike linebacker's depth and gap alignment since a heavy blitz look up the middle should push you toward the cutback lane instead of forcing the frontside gap.
Pair this with HB Stretch or HB Counter from the same set to keep defenders guessing on zone versus gap run schemes and prevent linebackers from sitting on one blocking pattern.
Use PA Boot Lt or F Lead Read Option out of the same personnel to punish defenses that start crashing hard on inside zone tendencies.
