Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap since fast flowing linebackers who fill the dive gap immediately open up the QB keep lane on the perimeter. Identify if the defense is in a 3-4 with a heavy edge presence, since a disciplined end who stays home on the QB neutralizes this play completely. On the user side, look for a spy or a defender sitting outside the tackle box, as that indicates the CPU or user is respecting the option and will crash down late rather than early. Man coverage shells with no extra run support in the box are the most vulnerable to this concept since the QB keep can outrun late-arriving corners.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the defensive end into declaring his run fit before the snap so you already know your keep or give decision. Watch for 4-3 under fronts and 3-4 fronts with a wide 9 technique end since these are the easiest alignments to read and exploit for the QB keep. This play pairs well with HB Power and HB Zone in the same set because all three look identical pre-snap and force the defense to respect both interior gaps and the edge. On early downs use this to stay ahead of the chains, and mix in Triple Option or Orbit Lead Triple Option from the same personnel to keep second level defenders honest against the pull read. Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge unblocked, since the QB has no lead blocker on the keep side in this look.
