Mtn HB Zone is an inside zone run out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel, featuring pre-snap motion that shifts the backfield look before the snap. The offensive line flows laterally to create a zone blocking wall while the HB reads the double team blocks at the point of attack and finds his cutback lane based on how the defensive front flows. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gaps created by zone flow, with the primary read being the playside double team and the backside cutback lane if the front overpursues.
Defensive Reads
Key the defensive tackle alignment before the snap, if he is shaded to the play side gap the double team will have a tougher time creating a clean lane so look for the backside cutback instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash down hard on zone flow the cutback lane behind them opens up for a big gain. Identify if the defense is running a nano blitz or edge pressure package pre-snap, since fast flow from the edge can blow up zone timing before the double team seals. Check safety rotation post-snap, a single high safety usually means the box is stacked and the cutback will be the higher value read, while two deep safeties often mean a lighter box and a cleaner initial read at the point of attack. If the user controls the middle linebacker and sits in the hole rather than flowing with the play fake, expect him to be the primary tackler and set up a cutback read behind him on the next call.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety, which tells you if you are facing man or zone principles in the box. Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short to medium) when you need to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest against play action shots later in the drive. If the defense shows a stacked box with 8 in the box, consider hotting the fullback or motion man into a pass release to force a numbers conflict instead of forcing the run. Pair this with PA Boot Lt or Read Option from the same formation to keep linebackers hesitant on run fits since the backfield action looks identical at the snap. Watch cornerback depth on the motion, if the corner follows tightly it confirms man coverage and you can key the backside cutback lane more aggressively since the defense is more susceptible to zone displacement.
