Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he flows hard downhill without reading his key the cutback lane behind the zone blocking will be wide open. Key the defensive end alignment on the play side, a wide nine technique invites a bend inside while a tight look forces the bounce outside. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1, these leave light boxes and are ideal for this zone run since the extra defender is removed from the run fit. Beware of Cover 4 or run blitz packages that stack the box with eight defenders, these fronts clog every gap and force a negative or minimal gain. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker spying the mesh point, if the user jumps the play side gap immediately, cut back away from that flow to exploit the vacated backside.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone coverage, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are facing man coverage and can expect fewer defenders in the run fit.

Count the box defenders before the snap, if the defense shows six or fewer in the box this zone run has a numbers advantage and should hit for positive yardage.

Pair Mtn HB Zone with HB Power and HB Stretch from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on one blocking scheme, keeping the defense honest between gap and zone concepts.

Run this play on early downs, first and ten or second and medium, to stay on schedule and set up play action shots like Orbit PA Power G or Mtn PA Y Corner later in the series.

If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, consider checking to Read Option or F Lead Read Option from the same set to make the extra defender wrong.
