Z Spot is a classic Spot concept out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel, designed specifically to attack Cover 3 and other zone shells. The Z runs a shallow spot route to sit down in the hook zone, while a corner route and a flat route stretch the underneath defenders horizontally and vertically to create a natural void for the sit route. This is a pass play, not play-action or an RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he widens with the flat route, the quarterback works inside to the spot sitting underneath the curl to flat defender, with the corner route as the deep alert if the safety bites on the underneath routes.

Defensive Reads

Identify the flat defender immediately after the snap, if he sinks with the corner route the spot route will be wide open underneath for an easy completion. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hook zone or spying the quarterback, since that defender can jump the spot route and bait a bad read. Check safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety in Cover 3 or Cover 1 signals the middle of the field is closed and the corner route may be capped, so lean on the spot and flat combo instead. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, the flat defender often has help underneath from a hard-flowing linebacker, so be ready to climb the spot route to the second level read if the underneath window closes. Recognize man blitz pressure by watching for late linebacker or nickel walk-ups, since a nano blitz look up front means the quarterback needs to get the ball out on time to the flat or spot before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Diagnose the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth and cornerback alignment, this play is built to punish Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops where the flat defender has to choose between the flat and the sit route. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, since Spot concepts can get grabby corners in trail technique in trouble. Use this on early downs to stay ahead of the chains, then come back to HB Power or HB Stretch out of the same Pistol Strong look to keep the defense honest against the run. On third and medium, trust the spot route sitting down in the honey hole zone between the underneath linebackers and the deep third defenders. Pair this with PA Boot Lt or PA Flood later in a series so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the play-action shot off identical personnel and formation.
