Breakdown

Z Spot out of Pistol Strong is a Spot concept designed to attack Cover 3 zone drops with a triangle stretch: the Z runs a quick out to the flat, a middle read sits down in the hole between the underneath zones, and a corner or bench route clears out the deep third. This is a classic zone beater built to hold the flat defender and curl-to-flat player with conflicting horizontal and vertical threats, and it also functions as a solid man beater on quick-hitting drags against off coverage. Your primary read progression starts with the flat route to influence the corner or flat defender, then works to the spot/sit route sitting down at 5-8 yards, and finally the corner clear-out route if a defender bites early or you get a one-on-one bust.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify single high safety alignment and off man corners as your green light for Cover 3, since the spot route sits directly in the soft spot between the underneath zone defenders. Post-snap, key the flat defender's drop: if he widens hard to the sideline, the spot route sitting down in the middle window should be wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Watch the curl-to-flat linebacker or nickel defender, since a disciplined zone drop that stays square and reads the quarterback's eyes can jump the spot route and bait a turnover. Against Cover 1 or Cover 0 man pressure, the flat route becomes your first alert since it clears quickly against a blitzing linebacker, but expect a user-controlled defender to lurk underneath and rob the spot route in those looks. If the defense shows a nano blitz or overload pressure package presnap, get the ball out fast to the flat or hot route in a quick outlet, since the spot route takes too long to develop against a four man rush that beats the protection immediately.

Usage Tips

Presnap, check for Cover 3 shells with a single high safety and off corners, since this play is built specifically to punish that zone drop spacing.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, hot route the corner route into a deeper vertical seam or bench it for the spot route to soften and take the easy completion underneath.

Use this play on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) to keep the offense on schedule, since the spot route gives you a high floor completion versus zone.

Pair Z Spot with Slants and Spacing from this same Strong Pistol set to keep the defense guessing between quick horizontal stretches and traditional zone-sit concepts, forcing linebackers to widen their drops.

Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow hole, since a smart human opponent will often spy the spot route; if you see a defender creeping into that window presnap, hot route the middle read into a deeper crosser or check to the flat first read instead.
