HB Blast Alert X Smoke is a downhill power run out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel with an Alert audible tag to a bubble style Smoke screen for the X receiver on the outside. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down with the fullback iso lead blocking through the hole while the HB takes the alert path north into the A gap behind the double team, and the X receiver simply releases into a quick smoke throw if the alert is triggered. This is a run play at heart with a built in RPO style alert, not a play action or dropback pass, so the primary read is pre-snap: check the X receiver's leverage and numbers, and if the defense is outnumbered or soft outside, throw the smoke instead of handing it off.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check corner and safety depth over the X receiver, press man or hard outside leverage kills the smoke option and forces the offense into the run. Watch the box count before the snap, six or more defenders in the box with the fullback iso blocker gives the defense a numbers advantage against the interior run. Post-snap, linebacker fill speed on the A and B gap determines whether the iso block wins, a fast scraping backer can blow up the lead block before the HB gets vertical. User the flat or slot defender toward the X receiver's side pre-snap to erase the smoke throw entirely, this forces the offense to live with the run every time. Zone coverages with a corner sitting on any outside flat route shut down the alert quickly, so aggressive zone shells with soft corners are the best counter to this concept.
Usage Tips
Use the Alert tag as your pre-snap trigger, if the defense walks a corner or safety down into the box leaving the X receiver one-on-one or in off coverage, throw the smoke immediately for a free access completion.
If the box count is light and the alert is not favorable, hand it off and trust the fullback iso block to seal the point of attack for downhill A gap or B gap pressure.
This play pairs well with HB Power and HB Off Tackle in the same set since all three sell the same downhill run action, keeping linebackers honest before you go to play action shots like PA Boot Lt or PA Flood.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want a low risk, high floor play that punishes both light boxes and overaggressive alignment on the perimeter.
Vary your alert usage so defenses cannot key run every time the fullback lines up in this personnel, mixing in HB Dive Wk or HB Counter from the same formation to keep linebacker flow honest.
