HB Stretch Alert X Lookie is an outside zone run out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel with an alert tag that changes the backside receiver assignment into a quick lookie route. The offensive line flows laterally to the play side while the HB takes the handoff on a stretch path, reading the zone blocking wall for a cutback or bounce lane based on how the defensive front flows. Backside, the X receiver runs a short lookie route as a built in answer if the defense sells out on the run, but the primary read on this play is the stretch zone run itself: the HB keys the playside double teams and edge defender leverage first, only checking the lookie route as an outlet if run help is not called.
Watch for defenders flowing hard playside immediately after the snap, since that is your cutback cue as the ball carrier. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange or defensive line stunt toward the play side, as this can blow up the stretch before it develops and should push you toward the backside cutback. Check the alignment of the strong side edge defender and outside linebacker pre-snap, since a wide or crashing alignment signals whether the stretch will bounce outside or stay tight off tackle. Man coverage on the X receiver with press alignment invites the lookie route as a quick answer, so recognize press man pre-snap and be ready to fire that route immediately if the run is not there. Heavy run blitzes or overloaded fronts stacked toward the strong side are the biggest threat to this play, so if you see extra defenders walked down pre-snap, consider checking to a different concept in the set like HB Zone or a pass tag.
Use pre-snap motion or a formation check to see if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety toward the strong side before the snap, since that tells you whether the stretch has a lane. Take the HB Stretch Alert X Lookie plenty of times in early down and medium distance situations to keep the defense honest before mixing in HB Power or HB Off Tackle from the same formation for gap scheme variety. If the defense shows a hard edge set or heavy box look, hot route or manually target the X lookie route immediately after the snap for a quick, low risk gain instead of forcing the run. Pair this call with Orbit HB Stretch or Orbit HB Power later in a series so the defense has to respect the orbit motion tag as well as the standard alert look. Control the HB with the stick and patiently press the line of scrimmage, letting the zone blocks develop before committing to a cutback lane rather than rushing north south immediately.
