Breakdown

Slants out of Pistol Strong (21 personnel) is a quick-hitting man beater built on a double slant concept with a crosser underneath. Both outside receivers break in on slants, converging toward the middle of the field from opposite sides, while the inside receiver runs a shallow drag/spot route underneath to hold linebackers and give the quarterback a check-down. The primary read starts with the frontside slant (right side, red route), then works to the backside slant (left, yellow) if the throwing lane is clotted, with the underneath crosser as the final outlet against a hard squeeze.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals he is sitting on the underneath crosser and will collision the slant routes. If the corners are playing off coverage with a two-high safety shell, expect the slants to sit in soft zone windows rather than separate cleanly, so be ready to check down. Man coverage with inside leverage corners is the biggest threat to this concept, since it takes away the natural slant angle and forces a longer developing throw. Post-snap, key the user-controlled defender flowing to the strong side, as this reveals whether the defense is rotating to take away the frontside slant read. A delayed A-gap blitz or double A-gap pressure can shut this play down quickly since the quarterback needs a clean pocket to hit the second read on the backside slant.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, look for man coverage indicators like press corners or a single-high safety rotated to one side, since the slants create natural leverage against man defenders trying to run with inside breaking routes.

Use the frontside slant as your first read against Cover 1 or Cover 3, then progress to the backside slant if the user jumps the initial route with a lurking linebacker.

Hot route the underneath crosser into a quicker drag if you are facing pressure looks, since it doubles as your hot read against blitzes off the edge.

This play works best on 2nd or 3rd and medium, giving both slants enough width to sit down in soft zones or separate against trailing man defenders.

Pair this with HB Power or HB Off Tackle from the same Pistol Strong set to keep the defense honest, then come back to Slants once the linebackers start creeping up to stop the run.
