Breakdown

X Post out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel is a man beater built around a deep post from the X receiver, who breaks vertically upfield before angling hard toward the middle of the field for a shot play. On the underneath level, two receivers to the strong side run crossing routes, one shallow drag pulling from the far side and one shorter cross settling in the intermediate window, giving you a leverage option if the post is capped. Backfield help comes from a wheel/flat route bending out of the backfield underneath the crossers, giving the quarterback a checkdown or man beater on late blitz pickup. Primary read starts with the X post to see if the safety bites or opens up the middle of the field, then progresses to the crossing routes underneath if the post is covered.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety looks before the snap since that alignment leaves the deep middle vulnerable to the X post if the corner gets beat off the line. Watch the flat and curl defenders after the snap, if they widen out to the crossing routes it confirms zone coverage and tells the quarterback to look deep immediately. Key the strong side linebacker depth, if he sits shallow expecting run action off the Pistol strong look, the underneath crossers will have room to work before he can react. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties are the toughest matchup for this concept since the post runs directly into the safety help, forcing a checkdown to the backfield route instead. Late blitz pressure off the edge can be neutralized by the backfield wheel or flat route, so watch for a user rushing off the corner and get the ball out quickly to that outlet if the post is not open.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the deep safeties before the snap, single high shells with the safety cheating toward the strong side open up the X post for an explosive gain.

Use the crossing routes as your hot route answer against man coverage since the shallow drag and intermediate cross create natural rub and separation versus tight man defenders.

Hold the ball just enough to let the post clear the linebacker level, throwing too early into a cover 3 or cover 4 shell invites an easy interception from a deep third defender.

Pair this play with HB Power or HB Off Tackle earlier in a series to get linebackers and safeties creeping toward the line of scrimmage, setting up the play-action feel that makes the post hit even bigger.

Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need explosive yardage and the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells expecting a checkdown route.
