Breakdown

Tr Opt Switch is a triple option run play out of the Pistol Strong formation with 21 personnel, designed to attack the edge with a switch read between the quarterback, dive back and pitch man. Off the snap the QB reads the dive key first (the yellow path showing a mesh into the backfield before bursting outside), then the mesh point flips to a pitch phase with the trailing back arcing outside as the lead blocker seals the edge (the red arrow blocking path in front of the QB). This is a pure run play with no route combos or coverage beaters involved, and the primary read progression goes dive key first, then pitch key as the QB works from inside to the edge.

Defensive Reads

Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker leverage pre-snap since these are the primary keys the QB reads through the mesh and pitch phases. Stacked fronts or 4-3 Under looks with a hard crashing end tend to get exposed because the pitch lane opens up once the edge defender commits inside. Contain-focused defenses that keep an outside linebacker unblocked can shut this down by forcing the QB to either give too early or get strung out wide. User-controlled defenders spying the QB or sitting outside the tackle box can blow up both mesh and pitch reads if they trigger downhill fast. Look for blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge, since the triple option struggles when the numbers advantage on the perimeter gets erased by an extra rusher.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs and short yardage situations where defenses are keying on standard run fits and haven't loaded the box for option looks.

Check the defensive front pre-snap for unblocked edge defenders since the entire triple option scheme hinges on who stays home versus who crashes down on the dive.

Motion or shift the fullback if your version of the playbook allows it to get a cleaner numbers advantage on the edge before the snap.

Pair this with Orbit Lead Triple Option or Read Option from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple option looks and can't sit on one specific read.

If the defense starts crashing hard on the dive key every snap, pull the ball and attack the pitch lane immediately instead of hesitating in the mesh.
