Fl Drive out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel is a classic drive concept pass play built around two crossing routes working at different depths, a shallow drive route and a deeper dig or crosser stacking behind it, designed to create natural picks and rubs against man coverage. The backside typically features a corner or out breaking route to hold the safety, while the flanker works the underneath crossing lane as the primary read. This is a man beater at its core, but the layered crossers also give it enough horizontal stretch to be effective against zone shells like Cover 3 and Cover 4, with the QB reading low to high off the initial crosser into the deeper dig.
Defensive Reads
Identify two-high safety shells pre-snap, Cover 2 and Cover 4 will squeeze the deep crosser but leave the shallow drive route open against zone drops if linebackers do not carry it wide enough. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sits low and wide he can undercut the shallow crosser and jump the throwing lane for a user pick. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this concept shines, since the natural rub created by the stacked crossers forces defenders to fight through traffic. Beware of Cover 3 sky or buzz calls that drop a safety down into the shallow hook zone, this defender becomes a lurk threat who can squat on the drive route and bait a turnover. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be an issue since drive concepts need time to develop, so check protection assignments and be ready to check into a quicker route if you see a nano blitz look pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are deep at 10-12 yards you are likely facing Cover 2 or Cover 4 and should prioritize the shallow drive route since the deep crossers will be capped.
If the corners are pressed at the line, hot route the flanker to a quick slant to counter man coverage and beat the jam before the drive concept has time to develop.
This play excels on second and medium to long third down situations because the crossing routes take time to clear the underneath zone drops and reach full separation.
Combine Fl Drive with HB Power or Inside Zone Split earlier in a drive to get linebackers cheating up on run reads, then come back to Fl Drive to exploit vacated underneath crossing lanes.
Pair this call with Slants or Z Spot in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between quick game and developing crosser concepts out of the same personnel grouping.
