PA Corner HB Slip is a play-action pass out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel that sells the run fake before attacking the boundary and deep middle. The outside receiver runs a corner route breaking toward the sideline off the play-action fake, while a second receiver runs a deep vertical up the seam on the opposite side, stretching the defense high and wide. The HB slips out of the backfield as a checkdown option underneath, giving you a built-in outlet against pressure. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the corner route creating separation on breaking defenders, but the vertical route on the backside can also punish single-high zone shells if the safety bites on the run fake. Primary read progression starts with the corner route, works to the deep vertical if the corner is blanketed, and dumps down to the HB slip route as the checkdown against a hard pass rush.

Defensive Reads

Watch for cornerback press alignment on the corner route side since press man leaves them vulnerable to the outside break if you sell the fake convincingly. Identify linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers crashing down on run fakes create natural throwing lanes for the HB slip route underneath. Key the safety rotation post-snap, if the deep safety bites hard on the play-action the backside vertical route becomes a big play threat against single-high looks. Beware of user-controlled defenders sitting in the corner route landing spot, disguised zone drops or a spy can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Recognize Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties splitting the field, this can squeeze the corner route window and force an earlier progression to the HB slip checkdown against underneath zone coverage.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance when the defense is respecting the run look from Pistol Strong formation.

Check pre-snap for single-high safety alignment since that opens up the corner route against man coverage and gives the backside vertical room to work if the safety cheats toward run support.

If the defense shows two-high shell, prioritize the corner route sideline read since the boundary defender is more likely to be isolated in man coverage.

Hot route the HB slip into a flat route if you need a faster underneath option against zone drops that flood the middle of the field.

Pair this play with HB Power or HB Off Tackle earlier in a series to sell the run fake harder, then call this play once linebackers start stepping up aggressively on run action.
