PA Corner HB Slip is a play-action pass out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel that shows run action to the HB before releasing him on a slip route out of the backfield. On the play side you get a corner route from the outside receiver stacked over a deep in-cut route (the red line) breaking hard to the corner sideline, while the backside receiver runs a vertical route up the numbers. The blocking scheme sells inside zone or gap run action up front to hold linebackers, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route against man coverage, works down to the deep in route working across the middle, and checks down to the HB slip if the underneath windows are jammed.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is stacked in the box expecting run based on the Strong Pistol personnel, since that alignment invites this play-action shot. Look for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with deep safeties staying home, which can squeeze the corner route and force you to the deep in-cut or HB slip instead. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill on the run fake, since that opens the HB slip release as an easy checkdown. Key the flat defender or underneath linebacker on the play side, if he widens with the corner route the deep in-cut sitting behind him becomes the window. Beware disguised Cover 2 or Tampa 2 looks where the deep safety sinks late, this can undercut the corner route and turn it into a costly interception.
Use this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are keying run action out of Pistol Strong.
Check safety depth pre-snap: if both safeties sit shallow expecting run, the corner route to the vertical stack has a soft window over the top.
Against man coverage, hot route the backside vertical receiver into a slant or drag if you see Cover 0 or man press with no safety help.
Sell the play fake by holding the snap button briefly before pulling for the pass so linebackers commit to the run fit.
Pair this with HB Power or HB Off Tackle earlier in a series so the defense over-reacts to the run action, then punish them with the corner route or HB slip when they cheat up.
