494 F Flat out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel is a five man route concept built around a deep crossing route as the primary man beater. The backside X runs a deep dig that crosses the field while the TE releases vertical up the seam before breaking back to the middle, creating a natural pick zone against man coverage. The flat back (F) runs a quick out to the flat for a built in checkdown, the frontside receiver runs a corner or streak into the boundary, and the remaining back stays in to help protect against edge pressure. The primary read is the deep crosser working from backside to frontside, then working down to the flat route if the window is not there.
Defensive Reads
Identify single high safety shells pre-snap, since Cover 1 and Cover 3 with man principles underneath get exploited by the deep crossing route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow zone drops from Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 match can undercut the crosser and force a checkdown to the flat. Key the flat defender on the strong side, since a hard jump on the F Flat route eliminates the easy checkdown and forces the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Look for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since this route directly threatens that zone and a smart user can jump the throw. Respect edge pressure from the weak side, since the protection is not heavy and a well timed blitz off that edge can collapse the pocket before the crosser fully develops.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at the safety shell before the snap to confirm if you are getting single high or two high, since the deep crosser thrives against man coverage with a single high safety rotated away.
Use the F Flat route as your built in answer versus zone blitzes and Cover 3 sky looks where the crosser gets sat down by underneath defenders.
Hot route the backside outlet blocker into a quick route if you diagnose a blitz pre-snap, since the protection is light with only one extra blocker in most looks.
Pair this play with Slants or Z Spot from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter routes before hitting them with the deep crosser on a critical down.
Best used on second and medium to second and long or third and long where the deep crossing route has time to develop and the defense is more likely to be in man coverage.
