PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel that pulls the QB left off a fake handoff. The route concept is a three level flood to the boot side: a deep TE crosser breaking back across the field, a deep out or corner route from the far outside receiver, and an underneath flat route from the fullback releasing to the sideline as the checkdown. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser coming open behind the linebackers, moves to the corner breaking route on the boot side, and finishes with the flat route underneath as the outlet against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Read the deep safety pre-snap, if he is sitting at 8 to 10 yards in a single high look he is a threat to jump the deep crosser once the QB turns his shoulders. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker at the snap, aggressive run blitz fits or fast linebacker flow to the play fake open up the crossing route and the boot lane behind them. Zone coverage with a flat defender sitting on the fullback route will erase the checkdown, so the QB has to climb the progression to the corner route instead. Man coverage on the outside corner route is vulnerable if the cornerback bites on the play fake or gets stuck in a trail technique, since the boot action buys extra time for separation. Edge pressure from the backside defensive end is the main threat to this concept, if the defense brings a user blitz off that edge the rollout can get cut off before the routes develop.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are keying run from Pistol Strong personnel, since the play fake sells hardest against downhill linebacker flow.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Single high shells with the strong safety cheating toward the run side leave the deep crosser and corner route with easy separation.

Hot route the fullback flat route to a deeper angle if you see man coverage from a linebacker, since it turns into a natural pick versus man beaters.

Roll the QB with the play design instead of stepping up in the pocket, the boot action is what creates the throwing lanes and negates edge pressure from the play side.

Pair this call with HB Power or HB Zone earlier in a series so the defense commits to the run fit, then hit them with PA Boot Lt once linebackers start crashing downhill.
