HB Stretch out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel is an outside zone run play that sends the offensive line laterally to stretch the defense before the back reads the cutback. The diagram shows the line moving in unison toward the play side with zone blocking, while the HB takes a lateral path behind the line before making a one cut upfield based on the defensive flow. This is a pure run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is playside outside track first, then cutback lane if the edge defender or DT overplays the stretch flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap, wide alignment or crashing edge speed can blow up the stretch track before it develops. Key the middle linebacker depth, if he is stacked tight to the line he can beat the cutback read with quick downhill pursuit. This run gets shut down by gap-exchange stunts and contain-focused fronts that keep a defender home on the backside cutback lane. It beats light boxes and defenses that overpursue flow, especially aggressive 4-3 fronts that flow hard to the sideline. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the mesh point or crashing down early, that is the tell for a scheme fit designed to stop outside zone.
Usage Tips
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box for the best lane odds against this outside zone concept.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing hard playside, then look to cut back against overaggressive pursuit.
Pair HB Stretch with HB Power and HB Off Tackle from the same set so defenses cannot key run direction based on formation tendency alone.
Mix in PA Boot Lt and PA Flood off the same Pistol Strong look to punish linebackers who start cheating downhill on stretch tendencies.
