Orbit HB Power is a run-heavy design out of Pistol Strong with 21 personnel, featuring the orbit motion from the second back to add misdirection before the snap. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole, with the fullback or second back kicking out the edge defender, creating a downhill power run to the strong side. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression is on the ball carrier's vision: press the initial hole, read the pulling guard's block, and be ready to bounce outside if the edge defender is not sealed.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back to follow the orbit motion, since that tells you if they are playing man principles or a spy technique. Check the box count before the snap: light boxes with six or fewer defenders favor this power run, while heavy boxes with an extra defender crashed down mean you should consider an audible. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker to see if they hold their gap or crash inside, which determines whether the ball carrier should stick to the designed hole or bounce it outside. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker flowing downhill early, since that is a sign of a run blitz that can be neutralized if your fullback gets a clean kick-out block. This play struggles against disciplined 4-3 or 3-4 fronts that stay square and read their gaps, and it can be blown up by A-gap blitzes if the interior offensive line fails to pick up the extra rusher.
Use the orbit motion to bait linebackers into flowing the wrong direction before the snap, then attack the vacated gap once you diagnose their reaction. This play shines on early downs (first and ten, second and short) where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime looks. Watch for stacked boxes with eight or more defenders, since that signals a run blitz and you may want to check to Orbit PA Wheel or Orbit PA Power G to punish overaggressive linebackers. Pair this play with HB Power and HB Power O in your play-calling sequence so defenders cannot key on the orbit motion alone, keeping them honest against both the standard and orbit-tagged versions. If you see the defense sliding a linebacker or safety to match the orbit motion, consider hot routing the H-back into a flat route to create a numbers mismatch on the edge.
