This is a run-first triple option play, not a pass concept, and it wins by forcing the defense to declare on the dive, QB keep, or pitch phase before the play develops. Primary read progression starts at the dive key on the interior defensive lineman, then moves to the pitch key defender on the edge as the QB decides whether to keep or pitch to the trailing back.

Defensive Reads

Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap, if they are crashing hard inside they are conceding the pitch phase so be ready to option outside quickly. Look for a user controlled defender flowing hard to the mesh point, which usually means the dive is taken away and the QB should pull immediately. Against heavy blitz packages or nano blitz setups, the pitch phase becomes risky since edge defenders may crash unblocked before the option decision is made, so be ready to check to a quick pass concept instead.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs when the defense is showing a base front without extra alignment to the play side edge, since triple option relies on numbers advantage outside.

Use pre-snap motion or a hot route check to identify if the defense is stacked with an extra defender on the edge, which signals you should audible to a different play in the set like HB Power or Read Option.

Key on the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, expect the interior dive read to be taken away so plan to pull the ball and work the perimeter option.

Pair this play with Orbit Lead Triple Option or F Lead Read Option in the same set to keep defenses guessing on which option phase you are attacking each snap.

Practice the QB dive read and pitch read timing in practice mode since mistiming the option decision against aggressive user defenders leads to negative plays.
