HB Slip Screen out of Pistol Strong 21 personnel is a designed screen pass built to slow down aggressive pass rushes and blitz-heavy defenses. Up front, the offensive line shows a delayed pass set before releasing to get out in front of the halfback, while the two outside receivers run vertical clear-out routes (one breaking hard upfield after an initial hitch, the other running a straight go) to pull cornerbacks and safeties away from the screen zone. The primary read is the halfback out of the backfield: the QB looks to sell the pocket, then dump the ball to the HB as he slips out and lets his blockers set up in space, with the vertical routes serving purely as coverage-clearing decoys.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing an overload blitz or heavy edge pressure look, since this screen is designed specifically to beat that aggression. Watch linebacker depth: if the linebackers are sitting shallow and reading the backfield instead of flowing with the offensive line's release, they can blow up the screen before it develops. Man coverage on the outside receivers can bait the defense into leaving underneath zones open, but a disciplined defense that keeps eyes on the HB will have a defender ready to jump the screen lane. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender who stays home in the middle of the field or sinks into a shallow zone drop rather than chasing the vertical routes, as that spy alignment is the biggest counter to this concept. Zone defenses with a linebacker spy or a defensive tackle who reads screen and peels off the rush are the primary killers of this play.
Usage Tips
Call this against defenses that bring extra pass rushers or show blitz pre-snap, since the delayed screen exploits defenders flowing hard upfield. Check the defensive line alignment before the snap: if you see a 3-4 look or edge rushers crashing wide, the lanes for your HB blockers open up faster. Use your outside vertical routes as legitimate answers if the defense drops into a deep zone shell, but train yourself to reset focus back to the HB release since that is the true first read. Pair this call with HB Power or HB Off Tackle earlier in a drive so the defense keys run action, then hit them with the screen to punish overpursuit and linebacker blitz tendencies. Best used on early downs or second-and-medium when defenses are more willing to sell out on pressure packages.
