PA Scissors out of Strong I Pro (21 personnel) uses a play-action fake to sell the run before the QB rolls into a dropback shell. The concept crosses a deep out from the X (breaking outside near the numbers) with a deep crossing route from the Y (TE) that stems opposite, creating the scissors crossing pattern against zone rotation. Underneath, the FB releases to the flat and the HB checks out of the backfield on a shallow drag, giving the quarterback a high-low option if the crossers are taken away. This is primarily a Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater, with the crossing routes designed to exploit the seams vacated by rotating safeties, and the primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working to the far sideline out route before checking down to the flat/drag combo underneath.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing since two safeties split wide (Cover 2 or Cover 4) means the crossers will have room to work the seams behind the corners and in front of a rotating safety. Watch linebacker depth off the line before the snap, because shallow linebackers are more likely to bite on the play-action fake and vacate the middle crossing lanes. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender sitting in the deep middle or lurking at the crossing point, since a rangy Cover 1 or Cover 3 defender sitting in that window can undercut both crossers and blow up the primary read. If linebackers stay disciplined and do not bite on the run fake, they can sink into the shallow drag and flat combo underneath, taking away the checkdown option and forcing the QB to hold the ball longer. Look for corners playing off-man or bail technique, since aggressive man corners jumping the out route can jump the X route and turn it into a pick-six opportunity against tighter man coverage looks.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short-medium) when you can sell the run fake convincingly, since the play action freezes linebackers and opens the crossing lanes. Pre-snap, identify two-high safety shells before the snap because this play is built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 rotations, not single-high Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a deep middle defender sitting in the crossers path. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 1, hot route the deep crosser into a shallow drag or check it down early to the FB flat instead of forcing the deep crossing read. Pair this play with HB Stretch or FB Dive earlier in a series to sell the run tendency, then call PA Scissors once the defense starts crashing linebackers downhill on run fakes. Combine with PA F-Corner or PA WR In later in a drive so the defense cannot key on the crossing action and has to respect multiple play-action shells off the same run look.
