Y-Post out of Strong I 21 personnel sends both outside receivers vertically up the field on go routes to stretch the deep coverage, while the Y (tight end) breaks from the strong side across the middle on a post route to attack the void behind linebackers and in front of safeties. The HB releases to the flat as a checkdown and outlet against blitz pressure. This is primarily a man beater, using the post to split man defenders and the vertical stems to occupy corners and remove deep help, with the flat route as a built-in answer versus underneath pressure. The primary read progression starts with the Y-Post as the initial deep shot, then works down to the flat route if the post is not open.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop can jump the post route before the tight end clears the traffic. Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap because this play is designed to attack the vacated middle of the field when there is no second deep defender. Key the corners on the outside vertical routes, if they bail immediately into a deep zone drop it signals zone coverage and you should look to the post sooner in your progression. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field (lurk technique) since that spy can undercut the post route and turn it into a turnover. Recognize Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap since two deep safeties can rob the post, in which case the HB flat route becomes the higher percentage answer.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since the Y-Post thrives when there is no extra deep help in the middle of the field.
Hot route the backside go route into a comeback or dig if you are facing a two high shell to give yourself an underneath option against zone drops.
Use the HB flat route as your dump off against Cover 3 or Cover 4 when the underneath defenders sink too deep on the post.
Pair this play with PA Slide or PA F-Corner in the same set to keep the defense honest on run action while still threatening the deep middle.
Call this on early downs or in play action situations where linebackers are more likely to bite on run fits, opening the post lane for the tight end.
