Mtn Inside Zone Split is a zone run play out of Strong I with 21 personnel, featuring pre-snap motion that shifts the formation before the snap. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing zone blocking with the HB taking a downhill path through the interior gaps, hitting the crease off the fullback's lead block. This is a pure run play with no route concepts, meant to attack light boxes and beat run fits with cutback lanes rather than any coverage shell. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback first, then bounce to the frontside gap if the backside is clogged.
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are stacked deep in a two high shell, the box should be light and this run hits fast. Watch linebacker alignment before the snap since blitzers showing in the A or B gaps signal a run blitz designed to beat inside zone at the mesh point. Post-snap, key the fullback's block target since his path tells you which gap the play is designed to hit. This run gets stopped by defenses that stack the box with eight defenders or run a hard fill scheme with edge defenders crashing inside. Man coverage on the backside often leaves the cutback lane open, so if you see man leverage from the linebackers, expect the ball carrier to bounce backside.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running man or zone coverage based on how the defender reacts to the shift. Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots in this set. Watch for base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with light boxes (six or fewer in the box) since this play struggles against stacked eight man fronts. Pair this with PA Slide or PA Power O later in a series since both plays start from the same Strong I look and punish defenders who bite on the run action. If you see the linebackers crashing hard downhill pre-snap, consider hot routing the fullback to check block or bounce the run play outside using the direction stick.
