Breakdown

FB Dive out of the Strong I formation is a straight downhill run play that hands the ball off to the fullback through the A gap. The diagram shows the fullback taking a direct handoff and hitting the hole immediately behind the center with a slight cutback angle, while the halfback stays in behind him as a lead blocker option and the offensive line blocks straight ahead for interior gap control. This is a pure run play designed to punish light boxes and overaggressive linebacker flow, not a play-action, RPO, or screen concept. The primary read is the fullback identifying the first crease off the center or guard and getting skinny through the A or B gap before defenders converge.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth. If both linebackers are sitting tight to the line of scrimmage in run fit, this play is likely to get stuffed. Watch for safety rotation down into the box before the snap. An eighth defender crashing down signals the defense is selling out to stop inside runs like FB Dive. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step. If he fires straight into the A gap without hesitation, the fullback has almost nowhere to go. This play struggles badly against goal line and heavy run stopping fronts with extra defensive linemen, since the interior gaps are already clogged before the snap. User-controlled defenders spying the middle of the field or shooting gaps on a delayed blitz can blow this play up quickly, so respect any defender lurking near the center presnap.

Usage Tips

Call this play when you see a light box with six or fewer defenders in the run fit since the fullback has almost no room to make people miss in the open field.

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to see if linebackers are keying run and creeping up, then bail into a different look if the box gets too crowded.

Pair FB Dive with HB Dive and HB Iso earlier in a drive so the defense respects inside gap runs, then hit them with PA FB Fake or PA Pound Draw Pass off the same look to punish overpursuit.

Best used on short yardage and goal line situations, third and one or fourth and one, where a hard-nosed interior run is exactly what the defense expects but can still be tough to stop with a well timed handoff.

Avoid calling this against stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box or against aggressive nano blitz packages, since the fullback has no lead blocker cushion once defenders shoot the gap untouched.
