Spacing out of Strong I Pro with 21 personnel spreads five underneath routes across the field to attack zone coverage voids. The X receiver runs a deep in from the backside, the TE and slot work a spot combo with a quick hitch and flat, and the Y off the strong side releases into a shallow crosser while the HB checks out into the boundary flat. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater built on horizontal stretch, with the primary read starting on the shallow flat routes before working back to the deep in against soft zone drops.
Identify Cover 3 by the single high safety and hard flat defenders, this leaves natural windows between the shallow flat and the deep in route for the offense. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops signal zone while linebackers turning and running with receivers signal man coverage. Cover 4 shows soft corners and safeties bailing deep, which opens the underneath spacing routes for quick completions before the defense can close. User lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone can jump the flat or spot routes, so quarterbacks need to look off the initial read and progress through the concept. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them can be exploited by the HB flat as a checkdown or hot-routed wheel route against a blown assignment.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, two deep safeties invites the deep in route while single high tells you to work the underneath spacing routes for easy yardage. Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz or zone drop before the snap. Hot route the HB flat to a wheel route if you diagnose man coverage across from a slower linebacker. This play shines on third and short to third and medium since the spacing concept naturally sits at the sticks. Pair Spacing with PA Slide or PA FB Fake from the same formation to keep defenders honest on run fits before hitting them with the same spacing look for explosive plays. Sequence Spacing with Curls or Z Spot to keep defenders guessing between shallow spacing and deeper hi lo reads.
