Breakdown

Mtn Stretch is an outside zone run out of the Strong I formation with 21 personnel, featuring pre-snap motion to shift the defensive alignment before the snap. The offensive line flows laterally toward the play side, with the fullback and lead blockers reaching to seal the edge and create a running lane for the HB to press outside before cutting upfield. This is a zone run play, not a man beater or RPO, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the outside hole first, then cut inside off the fullback's block if the edge is sealed by pursuit.

Defensive Reads

Watch for safety rotation after the motion, since a safety cheating down into the box signals run support and a potential edge defender who can string the play out. Key the play side outside linebacker or defensive end, since a hard crash inside opens the cutback lane while a patient read-and-react defender can blow up the stretch at the mound. This play struggles against fast-flow defenses with disciplined edge containment, since outside zone needs the defense to overcommit or get out of position to hit the cutback. Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard to the play side, since if they overrun the aiming point the cutback lane behind the fullback becomes wide open. Nano blitzes and aggressive inside blitz packages can be neutralized by this play if the fullback and offensive line get a clean double team at the point of attack, but unblocked edge pressure off the snap can blow this play up before the zone develops.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, since a linebacker or defensive back following the motion man reveals man coverage and confirms the box is not overloaded for the run. Attack this play against defenses stacked in the box with fewer than six defenders, since outside zone thrives on light fronts and misdirection. Hot route the fullback to adjust his aiming point if you see a hard edge defender crashing down, and consider kicking out the playside tackle blockers if the defense shows an overload blitz look. This play pairs well with Mtn PA Slide or PA Power O in the same set since both threaten the same edge and force linebackers to respect the outside stretch action before selling out on pass. Best called on first or second down in normal or run-heavy personnel situations, especially against defenses that have shown heavy inside blitz packages on prior snaps.
