This Mesh concept out of Strong I Pro (21 personnel) crosses two shallow receivers underneath, one from the left running a low drag through the middle and the other from the right sitting into a shallow crossing route, creating a natural pick against man coverage. Behind the mesh, the outside receiver runs a deep corner-post while the TE/FB releases vertically up the seam before breaking to the corner, stretching the defense high and low. The primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers underneath (work left to right off the pick), then climbs to the deep corner route on the outside, with the vertical seam route as a check-down or man-beater against overplayed underneath coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since a two high shell with soft corners signals zone drops that can suffocate the shallow crossers before they clear the mesh point. Watch for CBs in press man alignment on the outside receivers, which confirms man coverage and tells you the mesh pick will likely spring one of the crossers open immediately. Post-snap, key the MIKE and WILL linebackers for blitz timing since Mesh protection is thin and a well timed inside blitz can collapse the pocket before routes develop. User lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone between the crossers are the biggest threat to this concept, so if you see a defender sitting still in that window, look off to the corner route instead. Cover 3 with hard flowing linebackers can undercut the shallow crossers, so if the underneath defenders are flowing fast to the mesh point, climb the progression to the vertical seam or corner route immediately.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking for CBs in press or bump alignment, since this play thrives against man coverage due to the natural mesh pick.
If you see zone, look to hot route one of the crossers into a deeper sit route or use the corner route as your primary since mesh concepts can get clogged by zone defenders sitting in the shallow windows.
Use motion or a quick pre-snap read on the MIKE linebacker depth to determine if a blitz is coming, since Mesh is vulnerable to interior pressure with only the FB and offensive line in protection.
Pair this play with FB Dive or HB Dive from the same Strong I look to keep defenses honest on early downs, then dial up Mesh on second or third and short to medium once the defense starts cheating downhill.
Best deployed on third and short to third and medium situations where the natural rub route creates immediate separation against man defenders trailing in coverage.
