Defensive Reads

Check safety depth and alignment: two deep safeties respecting the vertical routes leave underneath defenders lighter, which opens the flat for the HB. Post-snap, key on the play side linebacker or nickel defender, since a disciplined scrape exchange or delayed contain read can sit on the screen and blow it up for a loss. Watch for a lurking Mike linebacker sitting in the shallow zone directly in the HB's release lane, as this is the biggest counter to slip screens in competitive play. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 1 with man match principles and aggressive edge rushers, this play has a high success rate since those defenders are running upfield away from the screen.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are keying on the run out of Strong I personnel, since the play mirrors HB Dive and HB Iso pre-snap. Watch for blitz-heavy fronts pre-snap, especially nano blitzes or overload pressure to one side, since the screen naturally beats extra rushers by letting them run past the play. Use the two vertical routes as your window-dressing, and if the defense shows soft zone or a deep two-shell, be ready to hit the outside verticals instead of forcing the screen into a spy or contain defender. Pair this play in sequence with HB Dive, FB Dive, and PA Power O to keep linebackers and safeties honest on run fits before dialing up the screen when they start crashing downhill. Avoid calling this against disciplined zone teams that keep linebackers at home, since scrape exchange defenders and lurking Mike linebackers can blow it up before the wall forms.
