Breakdown

Slants out of Strong I Pro (21 personnel) sends both outside receivers on quick slants breaking inside toward the middle of the field, while the TE on the line runs a shallow drag underneath to the opposite flat and the HB releases into a check down route just behind the line. This is a man beater built for a quick three step drop, using the slant-flat combo on the left side to stress the underneath defender while the drag clears out low zone space. The primary read progression starts with the outside slant to the boundary, works to the drag underneath if the slant is blanketed, then checks down to the HB in the flat as a last resort against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the corners are aligned in press or off coverage, since press man coverage can jump the slant route before it develops. Watch the flat defenders and slot defenders after the snap, because a hard flat drop from a linebacker will collapse the drag route window immediately. Against Cover 2 shells, key the corners funneling receivers inside into the safety help, which forces the QB to hold the ball and eat pressure. If the defense shows a nano blitz or edge pressure off the strong side, the HB check down becomes the answer since the quick game beats blitz timing before it arrives. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow drag lane, since that lurk defender is the most common play killer against this concept.

Usage Tips

Fire this play from under center on early downs like first and second and ten to keep the defense honest against your run game out of Strong I.

Pre-snap, look for the corners playing off man or soft press, since the slants need separation at the top of the route stem to work against tight man coverage.

If you see two high safeties with soft corners, hot route your backside slant receiver into a quick out to attack the flat before the corner can sink underneath.

Pair this call with FB Dive or HB Dive from the same formation and personnel to keep linebackers reading run and open up the slant windows over the middle.

Use the drag route as your primary answer against zone shells like Cover 3, since it settles into the hook zone right as linebackers are dropping to their landmarks.
