Power O Alert X Smoke is a Strong I Pro run play built around the classic Power O blocking scheme with a built-in pre-snap alert that converts the X receiver into a smoke screen route. Off the diagram, the offensive line and FB pull and seal for the HB running Power O behind the TE and guard, while the X receiver runs a quick smoke route to the flat as a hot answer against overloaded fronts or aggressive run blitzes. This is fundamentally a run play with an alert built in as a pressure release valve, not a true pass concept, so the primary read starts with the box count and blitz look pre-snap: if the defense stacks the box or shows blitz off the edge, throw the smoke alert to X for a quick access throw, otherwise hand it off and let Power O develop downhill.
Pre-snap, identify the free safety depth and count the box: a light box (six or fewer) tells the offense to run Power O, while a stacked box should trigger the Alert X Smoke read. Watch cornerback alignment on the X receiver side; press man coverage or a hard corner blitz signals the smoke route will be there immediately since the corner is out of position to squat on it. Post-snap, linebacker fill speed and the playside pulling guard's kick-out block are the keys to the run hitting, so defenses that scrape fast and set a hard edge can blow up Power O before it develops. Zone coverages with a flat defender sitting on the smoke route (like Cover 2 or Cover 3 sky) take away the alert throw and force the offense into the run, so watch for corners staying low and outside instead of pressing. User-controlled defenders spying the smoke route or robbing the flat can jump the quick throw, so defenses should key on the X receiver's release and get depth on the corner to close passing lanes immediately after the snap.
Check the box count before the snap and count defenders in the box against your blockers to decide whether to run Power O or trigger the Alert X Smoke throw.
Use the Alert X Smoke as your answer versus Cover 0 or man pressure looks where the defense shows six or more in the box, since the quick throw punishes overcommitted run fronts.
Pair this play with FB Dive and HB Iso from the same Strong I Pro set to keep the defense honest on early downs, since all three sell the same downhill run action before the defense can key on the alert.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sell out against the run, since that is exactly when the X Smoke alert becomes a free access throw.
Combine with PA Power O later in the series once defenders start flowing hard to stop Power O, since the play action off the same look can hit shots downfield.
