Z Spot is a classic Cover 3 beater out of the Strong I, 21 personnel set. The X runs a deep vertical seam from the outside, the TE releases up the seam and breaks outside on a corner route, the Z sits down on a spot route in the flat area at the sticks, and the HB checks out of the backfield on a shallow drag/flat route underneath to the opposite side. The concept floods the underneath and intermediate zones while stretching the deep third vertically, so the primary read progression is deep seam (X) to the spot sitting in the flat zone hole (Z) to the underneath drag (HB) as the checkdown.
Z Spot is built to exploit Cover 3 and other zone shells that leave a soft area between the flat defender and the deep third corner. Pre-snap, look at the corner depth over the Z receiver, if he is bailing deep at the snap that confirms zone and the spot window will open quickly. Watch the flat defender or curl-flat player after the snap, if he widens with the TE corner route the spot route sits wide open underneath him. Against man coverage this play is more vulnerable, especially if the defense brings a nano blitz off the edge since the HB stays in to check release late and can get exposed in protection. Cover 2 with two deep safeties can also cause issues since the TE corner route runs into the safety help, so be ready to work the spot to HB drag combination instead of forcing the deep shots.
Pre-snap, identify whether the corner over the Z is playing off or bailing into a deep third, since the spot route is designed to sit in that soft zone window underneath the corner. Use the TE corner route as a decoy against Cover 3 rotation to hold the flat defender and open the spot throw. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route the X seam into a slant or work the TE corner as your first read since man defenders will trail the spot route tightly. This play pairs well with Curls or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between deep zone flood concepts and quick underneath combos. Best called on second or third and short to medium since the spot route sits right at the sticks and the HB drag gives a safe checkdown against a hard pass rush.
