The primary read progression starts with the X post as the shot play, then works down to the deep in/dig sitting behind the linebackers, and finally checks down to the flat route if the underneath defenders squeeze the middle.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high safety looks like cover 1 or cover 3, since the post will threaten the deep middle void created by a lone deep defender. Watch cornerback press versus off alignment on the X receiver, press man with no safety help is the biggest liability this route combo exploits. Post-snap, track the middle linebacker or user lurk defender, a good user dropping into the post window can undercut the throw before it develops. Two high safety shells like cover 2 or cover 4 shut this down hard since both safeties can split the post and the underneath crosser, forcing you to check down to the flat. Watch for zone blitz packages that show pressure then drop a defender into the post lane, this disguised coverage can bait an interception if you force the deep throw.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or in shot situations when you have identified single high safety pre-snap, since the post attacks the seam vacated by that deep defender.
Check the cornerback alignment on the X receiver before the snap, if he is playing off man with no safety help over the top, take the shot immediately on the post.
Motion the fullback or tighten the formation to bait linebackers into showing blitz, then use the deep in/dig as a hot route answer if the post is capped.
