Defensive Reads
Watch the strong safety and free safety alignment before the snap, if they are both showing deep halves or quarters look, expect the drive route and dig to open up in the intermediate zones. Key the flat defender on the flanker's side, if he sinks with the drive route immediately, the quarterback will climb the ladder to the deep dig. Diagnose linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who crash down on the drive route open a throwing lane for the backside square-in over the middle. This concept struggles against man coverage with an underneath lurk defender sitting in the drive route's path, so bail to your hot route adjustment if you see press man or Cover 1 with a robber look. Blitzes with a spy or delayed linebacker rush can undercut the drive route, so account for that user-controlled defender lurking near the box before committing to the first read.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, look for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, which signals Cover 4 or Cover 2 and confirms this is the right call. Hot route the fullback or backside receiver into a quick out or flat route if you see man coverage on the flanker to give yourself an instant answer against blitzes. Use this on second and medium or third and short since the drive route sits at a shallow depth and picks up quick yardage after the catch. Pair FL Drive with HB Dive or FB Dive from the same Strong I look to keep linebackers honest and set up the play-action rollout later in the series. If the user drops a linebacker into the drive route's window, reset your eyes to the deep dig crossing from the backside for an explosive gain.
