HB Iso out of Strong I is a straight downhill power run that uses the FB as a lead blocker through the A or B gap while the HB reads the block and follows. The diagram shows the fullback attacking the second level to isolate and take on the first linebacker that shows, with the offensive line blocking down and the HB taking the handoff and pressing behind that lead block. This is a run play with no route combos, so it is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it is designed to win with numbers and gap integrity at the point of attack. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is: identify the FB's block, press the hole tight to his hip, then bounce outside if the alley is sealed or cut backside if the backside defender flows too hard.
Defensive Reads
Look for the middle linebacker's depth and shade before the snap, if he is stacked tight over the A gap he is likely keying the FB and will meet the lead block quickly, forcing you to bounce the run wider. Watch the strong safety in the box, an extra defender crashing down pre-snap signals a run blitz designed to beat Iso at the mesh point before the fullback can climb to the second level. Post-snap, key the play-side linebacker's first step, if he attacks downhill immediately he has read run and you need to trust your fullback's block or cut away from pursuit. This play struggles against stacked fronts with two off-ball linebackers reading run keys since they can both flow to the point of attack, but it gains explosive yardage against base 4-3 or nickel fronts with light boxes where the FB gets a clean seal on the first linebacker. If the defense shows a single high safety with the strong safety walked into the box pre-snap, expect an aggressive run fit and be ready to bounce outside the tackle for the cutback lane.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your play-action shots. Pre-snap, count the box: if you see 7 or fewer defenders in the box with no extra safety creeping down, this is a green light run. Use the FB lead block as your user-controlled key, take control of the fullback if you want to manually seal an edge blitzer or a run-fit linebacker who is stacking the point of attack. Pair this with PA FB Fake or PA Power O from the same Strong I personnel so the defense has to respect the fullback dive action before you hit them with a play-action shot off identical formation and motion. Avoid calling this into heavy blitz looks with safeties crashing down pre-snap since the extra hat can beat your FB's block before the HB reaches the crease, in those situations lean on FB Dive or Counter Weak instead to attack a different gap.
