Z Close F-Trail

Breakdown

Z Close F-Trail out of Strong I Pro 21 personnel is a play-action style trail concept that stresses the middle of the field with a crossing pattern. The Z runs a deep drag all the way across the field from the closed alignment, the fullback releases into a trail route that crosses underneath and climbs toward the opposite side, and the F back works an arc release out to the flat before turning upfield on a wheel. The X runs a deep dig or corner breaking route while the TE clears vertically, creating a natural high low crossing combo that is designed to beat man coverage by picking defenders off each other, with the primary read starting on the shallow drag crossing underneath then working to the trail route sitting behind it.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the X and Z receivers, which signals the crossing routes will create natural separation through traffic. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell with two deep safeties, expect the underneath crossers to be the primary throw since the deep shots will be taken away. Key the Sam linebacker and strong safety depth at the snap, since a shallow drop from either indicates they are spying the trail route or jumping the shallow drag. Look for a nano blitz or edge pressure package pre-snap, since the fullback's trail route release can be disrupted or the quarterback rushed before the crossers develop. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flowing toward the crossing routes early, which tips off a lurk technique designed to jump the shallow drag or trail concept.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs when you want to test man coverage because the crossing routes create natural rub picks against man defenders trailing across the formation.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the strong safety and Sam linebacker since the F back's arc to wheel is a big play window if the defense shows Cover 1 or Cover 3 with no flat defender.

If you see two high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the shallow drag and trail combo underneath since the deep wheel will likely be capped.

Pair this call with 494 F Flat and PA F-Corner in the same personnel to keep the defense guessing between quick flat throws and deep crossing shots off similar formation looks.

Hot route the TE into a quick out or seam read if you diagnose a zone blitz look, since the natural TE vertical release can get clogged by underneath zone defenders.
