Breakdown

Z Close Ctr WK is a counter run out of the Strong I formation with 21 personnel, built around misdirection and a pulling blocking scheme up front. The diagram shows the offensive line down blocking to the weak side while the FB and pulling linemen kick out to lead the HB back the opposite direction, creating the classic counter step and cutback lane. The Z receiver runs a short flat/drag route to occupy a flat defender while the FB motion adjusts the point of attack, so the primary read is the HB reading the down blocks first, then following the pulling lead blocker through the counter hole for the cutback.

Defensive Reads

Key the weak side linebacker and strong safety pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line they can blow up the counter timing before the pullers get set. Watch for user-controlled defenders flowing hard with the initial line motion, this often signals a defense selling out to stop the strong side and leaving the cutback wide open. Look for run blitzes from the edge, since the counter needs time for the pullers to get outside, a fast edge blitzer can beat the blocking scheme to the point of attack. Cover 3 and Cover 1 fronts with aggressive linebacker fills are the biggest threats to this play since they clog the cutback lane quickly. Bases with light boxes or defenses playing off-ball zone drops trying to defend the pass are most vulnerable, since the misdirection freezes second level defenders long enough for the HB to find the crease.

Usage Tips

Run this early in a series to establish the counter action before dialing up PA Power O or PA Pound Draw Pass off the same look.

Watch for linebackers crashing hard on first motion, if they flow too fast to the strong side the cutback lane opens instantly.

Use the FB motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts its front, this tells you whether the counter hole or the backside cutback will hit bigger.

Best called on run-friendly downs like 1st and 10 or short yardage on 2nd down when defenses expect inside zone or off tackle runs from Strong I.

Pair this with HB Cntr Wk Alert Z Smoke in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses honest against the smoke alert and prevent linebackers from sitting on the counter path.
