Spacing out of Singleback Bunch TE spreads five underneath stems across the width of the field, with the bunch releasing on a flat route, a quick out, and a vertical seam breakout while the backside X runs an outside comeback and the far receiver clears deep. The TE stays in as the fifth option on a shallow drag underneath, giving the QB a full horizontal stretch with no true blocking scheme since every eligible receiver runs a route. This is a classic zone beater built to exploit soft spots in Cover 3 and Cover 4, with the primary read progression working flat to out to the drag underneath as the QB reads the underneath defenders from the sideline in.
Defensive Reads
Play the flat defender first since Spacing lives on the sideline stretch, and any hesitation there opens the out route immediately behind it. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow drag lane, since a smart user lurk can bait the QB into a turnover on the underdiagram TE route. Identify Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 quarters shells presnap, since these are the primary coverages this concept is designed to beat with its horizontal stretch. Man coverage on the outside receivers, especially press man on the backside comeback, kills this concept because there is no natural separation route built in against tight coverage. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since a robber or spy dropping into the shallow drag zone can jump the underneath crossing route and bait an easy interception.
Usage Tips
Presnap, check for two deep safeties or three deep zone shells since Spacing is built to punish Cover 3 and Cover 4 defenders who sit in their zones without disciplined eyes.
Use the flat route as your first hot key against Cover 3 sky, then progress to the quick out and finally the shallow drag if underneath defenders widen with the flat.
Hot route the backside comeback into a hitch or curl if you see man coverage on the boundary corner, since Spacing loses value against tight man press.
Pair this play with Verticals or PA Boot from the same set to keep defenses honest, since Spacing’s quick underneath stems set up explosive shot plays once linebackers start jumping the short routes.
Best used on third and short to third and medium, or as a rhythm throw on first down to stay ahead of the chains against zone-heavy defenses.
