Mtn PA Boot Over is a play-action boot concept out of Singleback Bunch TE that uses the mountain (Mtn) motion shift to manipulate the bunch alignment before the snap. The fake handoff pulls flow one way while the quarterback boots out the opposite side, rolling with a deep over route sitting behind him for a shot down the field. This is a man beater against aggressive run support and single high shells, and the primary read progression starts with the deep over crossing the field, then works down to the underneath flat or drag route if the over is capped, using the boot action to buy extra time against edge pressure.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shading toward the bunch side signals man coverage or Cover 3 that this boot action can attack. Watch the play side linebacker level, if he steps up hard on the run fake, the deep over route behind him will be wide open for a big gain. Post-snap, track any user lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field since a smart user player can rob the deep over and force you to the checkdown. Cover 4 and Cover 2 shells with disciplined zone drops are the toughest matchup, the safeties stay deep and take away the over route, so be ready to check down to the flat. Watch for edge blitzers on the boot side, a contained edge rusher can collapse the pocket before the over route develops, so have a quick throw ready as a bail out option.

Usage Tips

Use the Mtn motion pre-snap to bait linebackers and safeties into flowing with the run fake, then check if they bite before the snap or stay disciplined in their zone drops.

This play hits best on early downs (first or second and medium) when the defense is geared up to stop the run or expecting Inside Zone from this same set.

If the corner over the bunch jumps the shallow routes, look immediately for the deep over crossing behind the boot since the coverage rotation should leave a void in the middle of the field.

Pair this call with Mtn Inside Zone and Mtn HB Zone Wk earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake, then dial up Mtn PA Boot Over to cash in on overcommitted linebackers.

Hot route the flat route to a corner route if you see Cover 3 sink underneath, giving you a second vertical shot against a defense that rolled its safety to help on the over.
