Mtn Fk Swing is a play-action pass out of Singleback Bunch TE that shows run action to the flat before the QB pulls back to throw. The bunch releases three vertical stems: an outside receiver on a deep corner route, a middle receiver on a deep in that settles as an outlet, and the inside bunch man clearing underneath on a shallow drag to the opposite side. The backside receiver runs a swing/arc route out of the backfield area to the flat, while the fake motion man sells a jet sweep fake toward the numbers to hold linebackers before the swing develops. This is a play-action man beater built to attack overaggressive run fits, with the primary read starting on the swing route in the flat, progressing to the shallow drag crossing underneath, and finishing at the deep in route if the defense bites on the fake and lurk defenders vacate.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, since single high with stacked linebackers is the ideal look for this play to exploit with the swing and drag combo. Watch for a hard cornerback press on the outside bunch receiver, which signals man coverage and makes the shallow drag the fastest answer against a trailing defender. Post-snap, track whether linebackers bite on the fake jet motion or the play-action run fake, since any hesitation opens a throwing lane to the swing route in the flat. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers at proper depth and do not bite on the run fake, since the flat defender can sit on the swing route. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker spying the backfield or dropping into a lurk position over the middle, as this can jump the deep in route if the QB holds it too long.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are primed to respect the run fake out of Singleback personnel.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if they are stacked tight to the line expecting run, the play action hold will be more effective and open the swing route faster.
Hot route the deep in route runner into a deeper comeback if you see a single high safety rotating hard to the field side, since that indicates zone coverage that will sink under the drag.
Pair this play with Mtn HB Screen and Zone Fake Jet in the same set to keep defenders guessing between run fakes, screens, and play-action shots off identical bunch alignment.
Against man coverage, key on the underneath drag route since it naturally picks up rub help from the bunch traffic and creates easy separation against trailing defenders.
