Breakdown

PA Jet Deep Out fakes the jet sweep motion across the backfield before the QB sells a play-action fake, giving the offensive line time to sell run blocking while the route concept develops behind it. Out of the Bunch TE look, the outside receiver runs a deep out breaking hard toward the sideline, the middle bunch receiver clears vertically before angling back to the boundary, and the third bunch receiver runs a shallow drag underneath while the backside receiver runs a deep crossing route to the opposite sideline. This is a play-action man beater that stresses the flat and deep out zones simultaneously, with the primary read progression starting on the deep out breaking to the sideline, then working underneath to the drag if the out is blanketed, and finally checking the backside crosser as a last resort against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows a single high safety or two high shell, since single high alignments are more vulnerable to the deep out and crosser combo hitting behind LB drops. Watch cornerback positioning on the outside receiver running the deep out, soft coverage or off man leaves that route wide open on the sideline break. Post-snap, track the flat or curl defender who has to respect both the jet motion fake and the shallow drag, hesitation here opens the deep out throwing lane. Look for user-controlled defenders sitting in short zones or lurking underneath, since they can jump the drag route or shallow crosser if the QB stares it down too long. Aggressive linebacker blitzes or run-focused fronts that bite on the jet action leave the middle of the field exposed to the backside crosser as a big-play answer.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel situations so the jet motion and play-action fake carry maximum credibility against run-fit defenses.

Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow and crashing hard on run fits, the deep out and crosser will have room to work behind them.

Hot route the shallow drag into a quick option or spot route against man coverage if you need a faster underneath answer versus press corners.

Pair this play with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep earlier in a series so the defense starts biting on the jet motion, then punish overaggressive run defense with this shot play.

Against zone shells, key the flat defender, if he widens with the drag route the deep out should have a natural window just past the sticks.
