Breakdown

Power Alert Bubble is an RPO out of Singleback Bunch TE that pairs a Power run scheme with a bubble screen alert to the bunch side. The diagram shows the offensive line and TE blocking down for Power while the running back kicks out on the lead path (the yellow arrow) into the hole, and the outermost bunch receiver bubbles out to the flat as the pre-snap RPO read (the red route). The primary read progression starts with the alert defender: if the flat defender or overhang crashes down on the run action, pull and throw the bubble immediately, otherwise hand off and let Power develop downhill.

Defensive Reads

Key the alley defender or slot cornerback aligned over the bunch, his run/pass conflict tells you the whole play pre-snap. Man coverage on the bunch side with no underneath help is a green light to throw the bubble since the blocker in front will spring the receiver. Zone coverage with a hard-sitting corner or overhang defender in the flat is a green light to hand off, since that defender is now removed from the box. Watch for user-controlled defenders flying downhill on the snap, a diagnosing linebacker who stays square can blow up both the Power lane and the bubble throw. Heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge favor the bubble screen since it gets the ball out before pressure arrives, but be wary of a slot corner blitz that jumps the route.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify the overhang defender or slot corner responsible for the bubble side before the snap since he is your entire alert key.

If that defender is sitting inside the box or crashing hard to stop Power, pull and fire the bubble instantly for a free five to seven yards.

If the defense shows two high safeties with the box light, trust the Power run since you likely have a numbers advantage at the point of attack.

Use this play early in a series to set up Shift HB Sweep or Zone Fake Jet later, since defenses that overcommit to stopping the edge or the bubble open up the interior run fits.

Mix in HB Pump Draw or Mtn Inside Zone from the same personnel to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from sitting on the bubble read every snap.
