Breakdown
Mtn DBL Swing runs out of Singleback Bunch TE with a tight bunch alignment to one side and a receiver flexed out to the numbers on the backside. From the bunch, one receiver runs a deep corner route stretching the sideline vertically, while a second bunch receiver runs a quick out that flattens after a short stem. The third bunch player and the backside receiver both run swing routes to the flat in opposite directions, giving the quarterback a double swing option underneath. This is a man beater built on natural picks and rub concepts at the line, with the corner route serving as the deep read and the double swing as the built-in checkdown against pressure or aggressive underneath coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage on the bunch side, a single high safety cheating over the top signals man coverage underneath that the corner route can exploit. Watch cornerback alignment on the outside receiver, if he is playing tight man technique the bunch rub concepts will create natural separation for the out and corner routes. Post-snap, key the flat defenders and linebackers on both sides, if they widen hard to one swing route the opposite swing route becomes wide open. User linebackers sitting in shallow zones or lurking underneath can jump the swing routes, so respect a spy or lurk defender before checking down. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined corner route defenders can shut down the deep shot, forcing the quarterback to live on the double swing concept instead.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or shifts to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the bunch alignment naturally creates rubs against man defenders trailing across traffic.
If the corner route wins early against a single high safety or a cornerback playing outside leverage, take that shot instead of settling for the swing.
Against zone shells, work the double swing to attack flat defenders and linebackers who have to choose which swing to widen with, then check down to whichever swing route has more grass.
This play fits best on third and short or second and medium since the swing routes give the quarterback an easy answer versus blitz looks.
Pair this with Mtn HB Screen and Mtn Fk Swing from the same set so the defense has to respect flat and swing action every time they see the bunch alignment, setting up the corner route as a home run shot later in the series.
