Shift Duo is a run play out of Singleback Bunch TE that uses a pre-snap shift to adjust the bunch alignment before the ball is snapped, giving the offense a numbers advantage or better angles at the point of attack. It runs Duo blocking, a double team scheme at the point of attack designed to displace the first level defenders and let the fullback-less lead blocker or offensive line climb to the second level for linebackers. The primary read is the playside double team, with the ball carrier reading the double team's push before pressing downhill and cutting off the linebacker fill, this is a run play built to grind out yards on the ground rather than a play-action or RPO look.
Check safety depth before the shift and again after it, if both safeties stay deep in a two high shell the box is lighter and Duo blocking should win at the point of attack. Watch the Mike linebacker's reaction to the shift motion, aggressive linebackers who crash downhill immediately can be sealed by the double team while disciplined linebackers who hold their gap will require a cutback read. This play struggles against stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz packages that bring extra defenders into the box before the shift resolves, since the double team cannot account for an extra unblocked defender. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the shift side, an overzealous user linebacker or safety crashing down opens up a cutback lane away from the shift. Man coverage shells with no run support rotation are especially vulnerable since Duo blocking wins with double team push, while zone shells that stay disciplined and keep a linebacker in the alley can limit this play to short gains.
Use the pre-snap shift to bait the defense into showing its hand, if linebackers or a safety flow with the shift you know you are facing man principles or a rotating zone shell that can be exploited on later downs.
Run this on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the run before dialing up Shift PA Duo Crossers off the same shift motion for a play-action counter.
Identify the Mike linebacker's alignment before the shift and again after it, if he stays put or overpursues after the shift you have a clean lane for the double team to climb and seal him.
Pair this play with Mtn Inside Zone or HB Pump Draw in your call sheet sequencing so the defense cannot key on shift motion alone to diagnose Duo blocking every time.
Against defenses that crash the edge or blitz off the shift, be ready to cut the run back inside since the double team is designed to hold up against overpursuing edge defenders.
