Mtn PA Switch Replace is a play-action pass out of the Singleback Bunch TE formation that uses a mountain motion shift to disguise a switch release concept from the bunch. The switch releases create natural traffic against man coverage while a replace route sits behind it to fill the void left by the switching receivers, giving you a built in answer against both man and zone shells. The primary read progression starts with the switch releasing receivers working for a rub against man defenders, then works down to the replace route sitting underneath if the coverage plays zone or if the switch gets jammed at the line.
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard on the play-action fake you have a clean throwing window to the switch release crossing behind him. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone underneath the bunch, this is the biggest threat to the replace route and will bait you into a pick six if you force it. Identify man coverage by checking if the corners align tight on the bunch receivers with no safety help over the top, this is when the switch releases create the most natural rub separation. Cover 3 zone defenders sinking into deep thirds will struggle to get depth in time if the play-action fake holds the linebackers, so attack the seam behind the flow. Blitz heavy fronts with the safety creeping down pre-snap signal a hot route adjustment is needed, since the protection may not hold long enough for the switch concept to develop.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties with the corners playing off the bunch, expect zone and prioritize the replace route sitting underneath the switch concept.
Use the mountain shift to bait linebackers into flowing hard toward the play-action fake, this opens throwing lanes for the switch releases working across the middle.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see man coverage rotate hard to the bunch side, giving you a built in answer against overload blitzes.
Pair this play with Mtn Inside Zone and Mtn HB Zone Wk earlier in a drive so the play-action fake carries more weight once the defense starts respecting the run action.
Best used on second and medium or third and short since the play-action hold takes time to develop and you need the defense to respect run first.
Sequence this with Mtn PA Deep Over and Mtn PA Boot Over from the same set to keep defenders guessing on which play-action shot is coming out of the bunch look.
