Jet Sweep out of Singleback Bunch TE is a pure run play built around outside speed. Pre-snap, a receiver goes in jet motion across the formation, takes the handoff, and follows the perimeter blocking wall along the line of scrimmage toward the sideline while the rest of the line and TE seal the point of attack. This is a numbers and edge speed run, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is simple: get the ball to the jet motion man in stride and read the edge blocks (kick out or seal) to decide whether to bounce it outside or cut it up inside the first alley that opens.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the flow of the linebackers and the corner over the bunch to see if they widen out to respect jet motion or stay home, which tells you if the defense is disciplined against sweep action. Watch for a defensive end or outside linebacker sitting on the edge with contain responsibility, since a disciplined edge defender can blow this play up before it develops. Post-snap, user a linebacker or safety and flow hard to the perimeter to beat blockers to the edge and force the runner to cut back into pursuit. This run struggles against defenses with fast flow linebackers and scrape exchange technique on the defensive line, as well as any front that keeps outside leverage defenders unblocked. If the defense shows an overloaded box or an all out blitz, the edge speed of the jet sweep can outrun the pursuit angles before the blitz gets home, so respect the cutback lane if the edge is sealed.
Usage Tips
Snap the ball right as the jet motion man crosses the frame so he has full speed at the mesh point and the defense has minimal time to flow.
Use this against defenses that show aggressive inside blitz looks or overload the box, since the edge speed can outrun linebackers flowing late.
Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from this same set so the defense has to respect the motion every snap, setting up explosive play-action shots off the same look.
Best called on early downs or in short yardage when the defense is not yet honoring perimeter speed, and avoid it versus defenses with a fast scrape exchange or contain corner sitting on the edge.
If the defense shows man coverage with the corner following motion across the formation, expect a quicker trigger from the defense, so be ready to cut it back inside immediately off your TE and tackle blocks.
