RPO Glance Post out of Shotgun Y Off Trips is a run pass option built off an inside zone read to the RB, with the read defender being the alley or box defender at the mesh point. On the backside, the isolated WR runs a glance post that breaks hard toward the middle of the field, while the trips side has the outside receiver working an out and up (corner conversion) route to hold the flat and deep defenders. The primary read is the QB's pre snap or post snap key on the read defender: if he sits or crashes the box, pull and throw the glance post behind him, and if he widens or bails to cover the post, hand it off on the zone run. This is a true RPO that attacks light boxes and single high or man coverage that leaves the post window open against the backer.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth and alignment: a single high safety cheating toward the trips side leaves the glance post window wide open against man coverage. Post snap, key the second level defender closest to the mesh point; if he crashes hard to stop the zone run, that is the signal the QB pulls and throws the post. User the middle linebacker or the defender assigned to the glance post in man coverage and undercut the route early since it breaks quickly toward the middle of the field. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with a robber or hole defender sitting underneath can shut down the post read by sitting in the throwing lane, forcing the offense into the run. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge on the backside since RPO concepts can be vulnerable to unblocked rushers if the offensive line is climbing to second level blockers on the run action.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, lean run and only pull the ball if the read defender explodes upfield unblocked.

Against man coverage look immediately for the glance post since it is the classic man beater in this concept, especially versus Cover 1 or Cover 3 man match where the backer has to run with the slot or TE release.

Use the trips side out and up as a hold route to occupy the flat defender and deep third defender, which opens throwing lanes underneath for the post if the safety bites on run action.

This play pairs well with RPO Duo Alert Glance and RPO Counter Glance Post in the same set since all three show similar run action but attack the same glance post window, forcing linebackers to freeze and creating leverage confusion.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are playing base run fits, since the RPO mechanic punishes aggressive linebacker flow to the run action.
