Deep Stick Out runs a Trips look with the backside X running a deep dig style crossing route from the outside, while the trips side stacks a stick concept underneath a deep out breaking to the boundary. The nearest trips receiver runs a quick stick/flat option, the middle receiver climbs vertically before breaking into the pattern, and the outside trips receiver runs the deep out shown in red, which is the primary read against zone due to the way it sits down over the flat defender. This is a zone beater at its core, using the stick concept to bait underneath defenders while the deep out and crossing dig stretch the field horizontally and vertically behind them.
Watch the flat defender on the trips side pre-snap since his depth tells you whether the deep out or the stick route will be open first. If the defense shows Cover 3, the deep out sitting down behind the corner and in front of the deep third safety is your best answer. Against Cover 2, look for the corner to jump the stick concept, which opens a throwing lane for the deep out over the top of the cornerback and under the safety. Man coverage with no help over the top can be a problem for the deep out, so check for a linebacker or nickel matched up on the outside trips receiver before committing to that route. Be alert for a sim pressure or nano blitz look with the defense crowding the line, since a hot route to a quick option or check to a shorter concept in the set may be necessary if the protection is outnumbered.
Use this on second and long or third and medium when you need a horizontal stretch concept that also has a built-in vertical answer.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high or single high since the deep out works best against zone coverages that leave a hole between the flat and deep third.
If you see man coverage, hot route the stick runner into a quick option route or motion him to create natural rub leverage against the trips bunch.
Progression should start with the deep out to the boundary since it is the built in first read against zone drops, then work down to the stick concept underneath if the cornerback sinks with the out.
Pair this play with Stick or All Curl from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and deeper zone beaters, since the formation and initial route stems look identical pre-snap.
