Slot 2 Buc lines up out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk with a trio of receivers to one side and a single receiver isolated to the boundary. The trips side runs a slant flat combo underneath paired with a corner route breaking outside and a deep go up the numbers, while the backside X runs a vertical go route to stretch the single high safety. The RB releases into the flat off the slant to create a natural flood read from short to deep, making this a quick game man beater that also stresses cover 3 zone drops with the flood concept to the trips side.
Defensive Reads
Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap since this concept is built to punish cover 1 and cover 3 with the flood to the trips side. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the RB the slant window opens immediately for an easy completion. Key the corner over the trips side, if he sinks with the corner route the slant flat combo underneath stays open all game. Look for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate zone, they can jump the corner route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Against cover 2 or cover 4 shells, the deep go routes get taken away, so bail to the underneath slant flat combo as the outlet instead of forcing the ball deep.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage or a cover 3 shell rolled to the trips side. Pre-snap, check for a single high safety and press corners, both of which signal man or cover 3, both of which this concept is designed to attack. Hot route the backside go to a hitch or curl against soft zone if the corner is playing deep off coverage. Work the flat to slant read first against man defenders who bite on the underneath crossers, then progress to the corner route against cover 3 defenders who widen with the flat. Pair this play with Slants or Quick Unders earlier in a drive to condition the defense to sit on short routes, then hit the corner or go route once linebackers and corners start jumping the underneath stuff.
