Outs from Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk sends five receivers into a route pattern loaded with out breaking routes at multiple levels. The backside X runs a deep comeback while the trio side stacks a deep out from the slot, a deep crossing dig from the TE, and a quick out from the flanker, with the RB releasing to the underneath flat as a checkdown. This is a zone beater built to attack the sideline against zone drops, and the primary read starts with the trio side out routes before working back to the deep comeback on the backside.
Defensive Reads
Identify the safety shell pre-snap because two high safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone drops that this out heavy concept is designed to exploit along the sideline. Watch the flat defender or curl to flat player after the snap since he has to choose between the underneath out and the deep out, and whichever one he leaves open is your throw. Key the corner's leverage before the snap, off coverage at depth invites the deep out and comeback while tight press alignment favors an inside breaking hot route instead. Man coverage with a single high safety is the toughest matchup for this concept since a trail defender can undercut every out breaking route, so be ready to check into a different concept or hot route the X. Watch for a lurking user controlled linebacker sitting on the shallow out routes, since that user defender can jump the quick out and bait a turnover if you force the throw.
Usage Tips
Use this on second and long or third and medium when defenses sit back in zone coverage since the multiple out breaking routes give you a full sideline stretch. Read the flat defender first because if he sinks with the deep out you have the underneath out or RB check down wide open. Against man coverage hot route the backside X into a slant or dig to avoid the low percentage comeback throw versus a trail defender. Pair this play with Curls Combo or Stick from the same set so you can dial up an out concept one snap and a curl or stick concept the next to keep linebackers and safeties guessing on their zone drops. Look to attack the boundary corner if he is playing off man technique since the out breaking routes create easy separation with a quick decisive throw.
