Breakdown

Power Read is a zone read run out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk, with the QB and HB aligned in a pistol-style backfield read mesh. The offensive line pulls the backside guard for power blocking to the play side while the QB reads the edge defender to decide between handing off on the power path or pulling and running the perimeter himself. This is a base run play designed to attack gap exchanges and outnumber the edge, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is the QB keying the read defender at the point of attack before the HB action is anything more than a mesh handoff or keep.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side defensive end pre-snap, since his leverage tells you whether he is reading the mesh point for a give read or crashing to take away the QB keeper. Watch for a spy linebacker or a defender walked up into the box who can react to the pulling guard, since that player is often the one who blows up the power path if left unblocked. If the defense shows a heavy box with safeties rotated down pre-snap, that is a strong indicator they are sitting on the run and daring you to throw, so be ready to check to a pass concept in the set. Post-snap, track the backside linebacker flow, since a disciplined backside defender who does not overpursue can cut off the cutback lane on the power scheme. Against man coverage shells with single high safety, this run hits hard downhill, but against zone blitz packages that bring extra defenders to the edge, the QB read gets muddied and the play loses its explosiveness.

Usage Tips

Use Power Read on early downs when the defense shows base personnel without extra edge defenders, since the play thrives against light boxes. Check pre-snap for a fast, aggressive read defender on the edge, since a disciplined DE who sits will kill the pull option and you should audible to Inside Zone or HB Base instead. If the defense stacks the box with 8 defenders or shows run blitz cues like linebackers creeping downhill, consider pulling out of Power Read into a quick game concept like Stick or Quick Unders to punish overcommitted defenders. Pair Power Read with HB Sweep and Buck Sweep in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both inside power and perimeter speed, keeping linebacker flow honest. On short yardage or goal line snaps, Power Read is effective because the downhill power blocking scheme forces defenders to fit the gap fast, but avoid calling it into predictable run downs against a defense that has stacked the box in response to previous power runs.
