Breakdown
Slot Option lines up from Shotgun Y Off Trio Wk with a trio bunch to the left and a single receiver to the right. The X receiver from the trio runs a deep comeback while the TE works an out and up seam that turns into a deep post, and the outside receiver of the trio breaks off a shallow out to occupy the flat defender. On the backside, the lone WR runs a deep dig while the RB releases on an option route out of the backfield, sitting or breaking depending on the linebacker leverage. This is a route-combo pass play built to attack both man and zone coverage, with the primary read starting on the TE seam-to-post, working to the option route out of the backfield if the middle is clogged, and finishing with the backside dig against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Watch the safety alignment before the snap: single-high shells invite the TE post read while two-high shells push you toward the option route or dig. Key the flat defender's reaction to the shallow out route, since a hard squeeze on that route opens the deep comeback behind him. Track the middle linebacker's depth and pass drop, as a shallow-dropping backer will collide with the RB option route and force a hitch. User-controlled safeties who cheat toward the post route will open up the deep comeback on the boundary, so account for that leverage. This play struggles against a disguised Cover 2 with aggressive corners jumping the comeback route, so be ready to check to the dig if the corner sits low pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for single-high versus two-high safety shells since the TE post only opens up cleanly against single-high coverage or when the safety bites on the comeback.
Use the RB option route as your answer versus man coverage on linebackers who struggle to mirror the break, especially on third and medium.
If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, hot route the shallow out receiver into a deeper crosser to stress the flat-to-curl defender.
Pair this play with Slot Cross or Double Drags from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick-hitting crossers and this vertical seam-post shot.
Best called on third and long or in two-minute situations where the dig and post give you explosive play equity against zone drops.
